‘This Journey’, by Paul Cunningham, Director, Ballina Arts Centre
‘This Journey’ is a new work for dance duet Irish aerial artist Robin Wilson and Undercurrent performer Isolde Carmody, an artist who uses a wheelchair.
The ensemble were Artists in Residence at Ballina Arts Centre in 2023 over a two- week period, made possible by funding received from the Ballina 2023 Community Events Fund and The North West Dance Residency Partnership.
One particular need during the Ballina Residency was for accessible accommodation to be available for Isolde while she worked in Ballina. A successful application to the Ballina 2023 Community Fund offset some of the costs involved in accommodating Isolde while she worked in the Arts Centre and to facilitate interaction with local community groups. This support was integral to the success of the residency.
During their time in Ballina Arts Centre the artists worked together to develop the aerial dance elements of the new work taking a deeper look into what movement and freedom to move/ journey, mean for us both metaphorically and physically. This research is now being fed back into the overall development of ‘This Journey’ which the ensemble plan to tour later in 2024.
‘Undercurrent’ is an ensemble that since its conception in 2016 has continued to explore work with performers with diverse experiences of mobility including Special Olympics swimmers, parkour performers, acrobats, performers who are wheelchair users and dance artists with different backgrounds and cultural styles.
